Old School Friday: The Sylvers

Posted by Kim S. on June 27, 2008

This week’s old school theme is kid groups. My pick is The Sylvers “Boogie Fever”. The Sylvers were a group of nine brothers and sisters who had a string of hits back in the 1970s. The Sylvers consisted of Olympia, Leon, Charmaine, James, Edmund, Ricky, Angie, Pat, and Foster. Foster was like the Michael Jackson of the group — the cute little brother who garnered most of the attention. Oldest brother Leon was an incredibly talented producer who wrote and produced songs for The Whispers, Shalamar, and Lakeside. I think my first album was the Sylvers album with “Boogie Fever” on it. And I even had a little crush on Foster. I have no idea where the Sylvers are these days, (although Edmund died of lung cancer in 2004) but thank God for YouTube where you can see them in all their polyester and afro’d glory.

Monday Funny

Posted by Kim S. on April 14, 2008

It’s Monday and yet another long work week begins. And we all need a little humor to get us through having our neck stomped on by the man. Eddie Murphy celebrated his birthday recently, and the good folks over at A Hot Mess posted one of his old videos “Whassup With U” to celebrate or make fun of. Anyway, that made me think of another song of his that I acutally liked “Put Your Mouth On Me”. I actually have the cassette single of that song. Wow, I am so OLD!!!! But when I look at it now, the video and song are hilarious, and I don’t think Eddie meant it to be. So without further adieu, “Put Your Mouth On Me”

Happy Monday!!!!!

The Banned Boondocks Episode

Posted by Kim S. on March 18, 2008

A couple months ago the black blogosphere was buzzing about The Boondocks episode that skewered BET and portrayed BET President Debra Lee as a Dr. Evil-like character. Apparently it was too hot for The Cartoon Network who refused to air it. Clips of the episode floated around the for weeks. Well now the full episode is available and was posted over at The Urban Blogger. It is absolutely hilarious. I seriously stan for Aaron McGruder. Uncle Ruckus is the funniest character on the show and he didn’t disappoint in this episode.

We Are the Ones (Video)

Posted by Kim S. on March 4, 2008

Will I. Am has created a new video for Barack Obama called “We Are the Ones”. It features another mulit-ethnic cast of supporters including Zoe Kravitz, Jessica Alba, George Lopez, Macy Gray, Tyrese, Regina King among others. With primaries in Rhode Island, Vermont, Texas, and Ohio (the last two being the most important) being held today, Sen. Obama will either become the definite Democratic nominee or there is gonna be a knock down drag-out fight at the Democratic Convention this summer. I’m hoping for the former. YES WE CAN!
