Guilty Pleasure: Something that you shouldn’t like, but like anyway.
Who doesn’t have one of those. I was thinking about guilty pleasures today as I was driving to work listening to the local pop station and that Jordin Sparks/Chris Brown song “No Air” came on. When I first heard the song, I was absolutely annoyed with it. I actually like Chris Brown, even though I’m well past the age of his average fan. I actually think he is really talented. But Jordin Sparks does nothing for me, so when I first heard “No Air” I was a little salty with Chris for singing on it. Plus the song is a little syrupy. But now I find myself loving the song. It has grown on me and now I’m a little mad at myself. Really, I’m 38 years old. Shouldn’t I be listening to jazz by now? But this whole “No Air” thing made me think of other guilty pleasures that would probably make some of my friends and family cringe or question my blackness. For example:
Jaker’s! The Adventures of Piggly Winks — Since I have a 2-year-old, I’m constantly watching PBS Sprout. This show is about the adventures Piggly Winks an 8-year-old pig from Ireland and his friends Dannon the duck and Fernie a young bull with Spanish roots (don’t ask). Anyway, I will watch this show even when my daughter isn’t watching. I even know the words to the theme song.
Toby Keith — I like some country music. I’m a huge Dixie Chicks fan, even bought their first two albums. But something about Toby Keith I always liked. His videos are always funny. I loved “How Do You Like Me Now” and “As Good As I Ever Was”. And in interviews he always seems personable. Of course when he was poppin *ish about my girls the Dixie Chicks, I had to give him the side-eye, but he’s still cool with me.
Grease 2 — Grease is one of my all time favorite musicals. I was a huge Olivia Newton-John fan back in the day. John Travolta was so fine in this movie. It made so much money, they decided to make a sequel with Michelle Pfeiffer and Maxwell Caufield (who?). Anyway, the sequel was a critical and financial BOMB! The summer before 9th grade, Grease 2 came on HBO. I watched that movie everytime it came on, seriously. 8 p.m., midnight, 3 a.m. Whenever it came on I was there. I was 14, hormonal, and slightly crazy. And now when I watch the movie, its hilarious and good gawd awful!
Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus “See You Again” — I’m sure to lose major cool points, but I think its a cute song. It sounds like 80s new wave to me. I guess I gotta stop listening to the top 40 stations.
And with that last confession, I’m gonna stop right there before I get a visit from the Drop Squad and get my Negro card taken away by Chuck D.
